May 31, 2011 – Tobyhanna Army Depot Seeks Historic Photos, Documents
TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT, PA. — Do you have historic photos or documents about the region's largest employer?
Tobyhanna Army Depot will observe two significant milestones in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, Tobyhanna will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Army's arrival, when the area was first used as an Army field artillery training site. In 2013, Tobyhanna will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Tobyhanna Signal Depot, which occurred Feb. 1, 1953.
On June 4, Tobyhanna will conduct a Scanning Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Landing. Regional residents are invited to bring photos and documents related to the Army's presence at Tobyhanna over the last century. Originals will be scanned and returned while residents wait.
Donated items will supplement the depot's historic collection and may be used in displays, publications and video productions over the next two years.
"We hope to expand our collection of historic photos and documents, and perhaps learn more about Tobyhanna's significance to the region and to our nation over the last 100 years," says Michele Yeager, who is facilitating a committee of depot employees planning the twin observances. "We are looking for photos, documents, newspaper articles and other publications that will add to our existing collection of information. We will scan the material that day and return the originals to the owners while they wait. We're excited about seeing what area residents will share with us, particularly from the 1912-1947, as well as during the planning and construction of the depot in the 1950s."
"Local residents and Tobyhanna retirees have been great sources of information over the years during previous anniversary events here, and we look forward to their support as we prepare for these major events."
For more information, call the depot's Public Affairs Office at 570 615-7308 or e-mail Yeager at michele.yeager@us.army.mil. Tobyhanna is located at Interstate 380's Exit 8 in Monroe County.

Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union (TobyFCU) recently donated $1000.00 to the Old Forge Area High School to help fund attendance to the New York City Trade Fair in Manhattan on April 7, 2011. The program is through the Business Practices Firm, Center for Simulated Business Services at Mercer County Community College. The purpose of the program is for students to create a marketing/sales project involving real events where firms buy and sell simulated products and services. Overall the program teaches entrepreneurial skills that require intensive cooperation among the students. Students are required to create a marketing plan, business plan, and financial data to name a few.
The Old Forge students created "Ticket Wizard" as their business which involved the sale of movie, concert, and related ticket packages. The students decorated a booth at the Expo and showcased their product lines to other participating schools. All students had the opportunity to buy and sell from each other throughout the day. Nearly 1600 students were at the event. Old Forge High School was one of three schools from our area.
A portion of the funding also came from the Scranton Chamber of Commerce. In addition, the students took on the goal of raising nearly $2,000 on their own. Fundraisers included a Coffee Cart business and the sale of Candy-Cane grams during the holidays.
