NOVEMBER 03, 2009 – Cell Phones for Soldiers and TobyFCU, Kick Off Cell Phone Collection Drive.

More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers, and Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union are calling on all Americans to support for these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

“Over the past few years, we have been amazed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue.” says Brittany Bergquist, Cell Phones for Soldiers co-founder. “It is easy for Americans to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their unused cell phones, and providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.”

Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones throughout November at any TobyFCU branch location, including:
- 880 Schechter Drive, Wilkes-Barre
- 300 Mulberry Street, Scranton
- Building #11, Tobyhanna Army Depot Employees Only
- 4 Progress Street, East Stroudsburg
For directions call toll free 1-866-862-9328 or go online at www.tobyhannafcu.org.

“We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soliders,” says Nina Waskevich, Marketing & Sales Manager.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“We are continuously overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However, the need for support keeps growing as more soldiers are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

The donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.

Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials, including:

• Gold, silver and platinum from circuit boards
• Copper wiring from phone chargers
• Nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs
• Plastic from phone cases and accessories

About Cell Phones for Soldiers:

Cell Phones for Soldiers was created by Brittany & Robbie Bergquist of Norwell MA. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out. They started by opening an account with $21.00 of their own money. They are collecting cash donations and old cell phones. The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East. Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their efforts have motivated people and businesses around the country to donate to this worthy cause. Their goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free. For more information, please visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

March 5, 2009 – AS TRADITIONAL STUDENT LOAN LENDERS STEP BACK, TOBYHANNA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION STEPS UP

In today’s financial world, there is no debate about the dismal state of student lending. In spite of recent government intervention to shore up federally backed loans, 2008 has been marked by a mass exodus of many traditional lenders from the student lending market. Caused in large part by cuts in subsidies, ongoing market turmoil and restricted access to capital, this exodus has left students and families scrambling for high-quality educational financing like never before.

According to Nina Waskevich, Marketing & Sales Manager, Tobyhanna FCU, while the availability of federal loans has come under intense scrutiny, consumers who are forced to rely on private student loans may actually feel the biggest pinch. “The cost of college education has risen dramatically over the last 15 years. This has led to an ever-increasing gap between what scholarships and federal loans cover and the actual cost of attendance,” said Waskevich. “For a college student attending a public school for four years, that gap has grown to more than $30,000. And for those attending a private school, the gap jumps to well over $100,000. Private student loans fill that gap, and with so many lenders leaving the market, students will not only find these loans harder to come by, but they will likely be faced with higher rates and fees.”

In hopes of bringing superior economic value to the marketplace and meeting the educational financing needs of credit union members and local consumers, in early 2009 Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union partnered with several of the nation’s leading credit unions to develop a new private lending solution called Credit Union Student Choice.

“With the turmoil in the marketplace, we felt it was imperative that credit unions, as not-for-profit balance sheet lenders with a unique ability and willingness to collaborate, get into the student lending business," said Waskevich. "Credit unions exist first and foremost to meet the needs of their membership, not to maximize profit by selling off loans to Wall Street. We are very proud to offer a private student loan that will deliver real value and meet a pressing need.”

Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union’s loan features include zero origination fees, significantly lower interest rates, in-school deferred payment, co-signer release, and a graduated repayment option. “It’s a very unique product that is structured as a line of credit, which allows students to make multiple draws over the course of their entire college career after completing just one simple application," said Waskevich. "Most importantly, we control the pricing and retain the ongoing relationship with our member. And considering we're a not-for-profit cooperative that's been making consumer loans for over 50 years, it's a natural progression for us to offer this product.”

Waskevich also points out that many lenders take advantage of consumers’ lack of knowledge about education financing options. "The website we've built will help consumers make better decisions by providing in-depth information on all of the ways to finance a college education as well as calculators that will actually show them the numbers." To access this information and learn more about Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union’s private student loan option, visit www.tobyhannafcu.org or call 1-866-TOBYFCU (862-9328).

February 4, 2009 – TOBYHANNA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION BACKS DIRECT DEPOSIT OF SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS WITH GO DIRECT

Tobyhanna FCU is pleased to announce the partnership with Go Direct, a national campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Banks, to encourage people who get Social Security and other federal benefit payments by check to switch to direct deposit.

Go Direct reaches out to people about direct deposit in many different ways, including media, advertising and Web sites in English and Spanish. But the most powerful avenue for getting out the message is face-to-face communication – and that’s where Tobyhanna FCU comes in.

Tobyhanna FCU is a familiar, trusted source of information for Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties and can help them make this small, but important change in your financial well-being. Tobyhanna FCU encourages everyone to participate in this worthy effort by calling the number at the bottom of this article.

Direct deposit is simply the best way to receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. Direct deposit eliminates the risk of lost or stolen checks, reduces fraud, helps protect against identity theft and gives people more control over their money. Plus, direct deposit provides people with immediate access to their money from virtually everywhere.

Direct deposit also saves taxpayers millions of dollars. If every current federal benefit check recipient switched to direct deposit, it would save taxpayers about $130 million a year. Almost all the money saved remains in the Social Security Trust Fund – a benefit to all Americans for years to come.

Tobyhanna FCU and Go Direct makes it easy for people who get Social Security and SSI to sign up for direct deposit. Look for the Go Direct banner on Tobyhanna FCU’s website located at www.tobyhannafcu.org, call toll free at 1-866-TOBYFCU (862-9328), or visit one of their four branch locations in East Stroudsburg, Scranton, Tobyhanna (Depot employee access), or Wilkes-Barre.

Consumers can also enroll themselves by calling 1-800-333-1795 or accessing Go Direct online at www.GoDirect.org.
